Three-Stage Metacognition Control

R — 原文 (Reading)

R — Original Text (Reading)

"Metacognition is the cognition and understanding of your own thinking process... The brain is just an organ in your body, like your hands and feet, and you can use 'metacognition' to control it! Metacognition is the real brain that controls your brain."
"Metacognition allows you to clearly see the entire process and take full control of these three links: First, control input... Second, control the brain... Activate metacognition and choose one of the following three processing methods based on different types of information: 1. Discard useless information; 2. Store beneficial information; 3. Process information that requires active handling."
—— Chapter 7, Cognitive Dividends

(Interpretation)

I — Methodology Framework (Interpretation)

  1. Core definition of metacognition: The cognition and understanding of one's own thinking process. That is, "you know what you are thinking and can control how you think". The brain is an organ (like hands and feet) that can be controlled by you; you are the "real brain" standing behind your physical brain.
  2. The brain's working model is simplified into three stages: Information Input → Black Box (Processing) → Output Results. Without metacognition, the black box operates automatically; after activating metacognition, you take full control of all three links.
  3. Three-stage control method:
    • Control Input: Attention determines what information you receive, information determines what you think about, thinking determines output, and output determines your life. Use metacognition like an antivirus software to gatekeep, showing zero tolerance for unqualified information.
    • Control Brain: Classify incoming information into three categories for processing: (1) Useless information → Discard (Identification standard: You can naturally distinguish wrong information after establishing a correct cognitive baseline); (2) Beneficial information → Store (four categories: concepts, values, thinking modes, methodologies); (3) Information requiring processing → Call corresponding thinking modes/methodologies for handling.
    • Control Output: Execute thinking results with high quality at the behavioral level. Without metacognition, even if you know what to do, you may fail to do it well (procrastination, emotional interference, distorted execution).
  4. Three methods to improve metacognitive ability: Reading (compare the author's thinking vs your own), Meditation (practice the ability to pull back attention), Daily Reflection (review the thinking process itself).

(Past Application)

A1 — Application in the Book (Past Application)

App
  • Compare states with and without metacognition using the example of scrolling TikTok: Without metacognition, 3 hours pass unconsciously; with metacognition, a "corrective voice" appears in the brain: "Why are you keep scrolling? Is your attention being harvested by others?" Then you actively close the app.
  • Analogy of the relationship between mobile phone and user: The CPU is the computer's brain, programs control the CPU, and humans control programs; similarly, the brain is an organ, and metacognition is the "human" that controls the brain.
  • Analogy of 110 emergency calls to explain information processing: "Thinking modes/methodologies" stored in the brain are like apps, "concepts" are like contact lists. When handling a problem, first judge the problem type, then launch the corresponding app.
  • Describe the process of exercising metacognition using meditation experience: At first, "metacognition" and "brain" repeatedly tug of war, gradually you can control for longer periods.

(Future Trigger)

A2 — Trigger Scenarios (Future Trigger)

  • attention-management
  • nlp-levels
When to use this skill:
  • Know what to do but can't follow through (know you should study but scroll through your phone, know you shouldn't lose temper but do it anyway)
  • Emotionally hijacked by negative information/events, unable to think rationally
  • Learned a lot of knowledge but can't apply it (input but no output)
  • Mind is messy, unable to focus on handling complex problems
  • Need to improve decision quality (avoid the brain's autopilot mode)
Language signals:
  • "Know but can't follow through"
  • "I'm emotional again"
  • "My mind is messy"
  • "Learned but can't apply it"
  • "Can't control myself"
  • "I'm hijacked by my brain again"
  • "Why can't I stop even though I know it's wrong"
Differentiation from adjacent skills:
  • Difference from
    attention-management
: This skill focuses on "how to control the complete process of the brain's information processing (input→processing→output)"; attention-management focuses on the macro allocation of "which high-return directions attention should be directed to".
  • Difference from
    nlp-levels
: This skill is operational control of information processing; nlp-levels is strategic positioning of understanding levels.
  • If the problem is "I don't know where to direct my attention" → Use attention-management
  • If the problem is "I don't know what kind of person I should become" → Use nlp-levels
  • If the problem is "I know what to do but can't control my brain" → Use metacognition-control

(Execution)

E — Executable Steps (Execution)

Step 1: Activate metacognitive awareness
  • Set 3 fixed time points in a day (e.g., 9:00, 14:00, 21:00), use an alarm to remind yourself to do a 10-second metacognitive check
  • Check content: What am I thinking right now? Is my brain in autopilot or conscious control?
  • If autopilot is detected (mindless scrolling, being carried away by emotions, repeating invalid thoughts in the mind), pause immediately
  • Completion standard: Complete 3 daily metacognitive checks for 7 consecutive days, record the number of detected "autopilot" instances
Step 2: Establish the three-stage control process
  • Input Control: List your main daily information sources, mark each source as "nutritious" or "junk food". Set physical blocks for junk sources (unfollow, uninstall, turn off notifications)
  • Brain Control: For each piece of information entering the brain, spend 3 seconds to judge: Discard? Store? Process? Organize the storage library once a week (four categories: concepts, values, thinking modes, methodologies)
  • Output Control: Spend 1 minute to preview before executing important tasks: What is the expected output? What possible interferences are there? How to deal with them?
  • Completion standard: Information source list (marked nutritious/junk) + initial version of four-category storage library + continuous practice of pre-execution preview 5 times
Step 3: Strengthen metacognitive muscles through meditation
  • Spend 15 minutes daily on focused meditation: Close eyes, focus on breathing, use metacognition to pull back attention when distracted
  • Record the number of times you "pull back attention" in each meditation, observe if it increases week by week
  • Transfer the "awareness→pull back" ability learned in meditation to daily work: When the brain is in autopilot, pull back in the same way
  • Completion standard: Complete 15-minute meditation for 14 consecutive days, record the number of pull backs, observe a significant improvement in the second week compared to the first

B — 边界 (Boundary)

B — Boundary

Scenarios not to use:
  • Do not activate metacognitive analysis in emergencies requiring rapid instinctive responses (e.g., braking to avoid danger, escaping a fire), overthinking is dangerous at such times
  • Do not interrupt deep flow state to "check metacognition" — flow itself is a high-quality brain operation state
  • When communicating emotionally with a partner or friend, do not replace the "feeling mode" with metacognition's "analysis mode", otherwise the other party will feel you are cold
Failure modes:
  • Turning metacognition into "overthinking" — analyzing every thought, leading to decision paralysis
  • Over-controlling input, resulting in information cocoon — only reading "beneficial" information, isolating accidental inspiration and trend signals
  • Storing a lot of information but never processing or outputting, turning the brain into a warehouse instead of a factory
  • Only able to control attention during meditation, still in autopilot in daily life (disconnection between meditation and life)
Author's blind spots:
  • The discussion on the "strength" of metacognitive ability is too general, lacking quantifiable evaluation standards
  • The three-category division of "discard/store/process" is too simplified, in reality a lot of information is in the gray area (may be useful but uncertain when to use)
  • The priority of the three improvement methods is unclear, readers may want to do all three but lack the energy
  • Did not discuss the negative impact of over-active metacognition (e.g., excessive self-monitoring in anxiety patients)
  • The operational standard for "how to judge whether a piece of information is beneficial" is not specific enough

Related Skills

This skill is associated with the following skills:
  • brain-unseal (prerequisite): Unsealing the brain is a prerequisite for metacognition control — only after first unsealing the brain from the constraints of negative words and emotions can metacognition successfully take over the three stages of information processing (input→processing→output).
  • attention-management (collaborative): The "Control Input" stage of metacognition control is highly complementary to attention management. Attention management determines which high-return directions attention is directed to (strategy), while metacognition control determines how to process these input information (operation).
